Wilko Johnson Wife: Meet Irene Knight – Wilko Johnson was known for his distinct guitar playing style, which he achieved by foregoing the use of a pick in favor of fingerstyle.

This allowed him to play rhythm guitar while also riffing or soloing, resulting in a highly percussive guitar sound.

He attended Westcliff High School for Boys and participated in a number of local groups before enrolling at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne to pursue a BA in English Language and Literature. Anglo-Saxon and ancient Icelandic sagas were part of his undergraduate studies.

He returned to Essex to play with the Pigboy Charlie Band after graduating and traveling overland to India. Dr. Feelgood evolved into a mainstay of the 1970s pub rock movement. Johnson returned from Goa and worked as an English teacher for less than a year in 1972.

Johnson purchased his first Fender Telecaster in 1965 for £90 (equivalent to £1,854 in 2021) from a shop in Southend, Essex.

He used to play a vintage 1962 Fender Telecaster with a rosewood fingerboard that he purchased in 1974, shortly after Dr. Feelgood signed their first record contract.

Johnson refinished the sunburst-colored body with a white pickguard in black and added a red pickguard.

Johnson created his own image by combining jerky stage movements (his so-called “duck walk”) with a choppy guitar style, occasionally raising his guitar to his shoulder like a gun, and wearing unusual clothing (he favoured a black suit and a pudding bowl haircut). He achieved his playing style by relying on fingerstyle rather than a pick.

Johnson was forced to cancel a show in November 2012 after being rushed to the hospital with an unspecified illness. He was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer in January 2013 and chose not to undergo chemotherapy.

On January 25, 2013, he spoke with John Wilson on BBC Radio 4’s arts programme Front Row. He talked about his cancer and how doctors told him he only had nine or ten months to live. He also discussed his upcoming “farewell tour” of the United Kingdom, as well as how his diagnosis had made him feel more alive.

He announced after the tour that he would spend his final days recording a farewell album with The Who’s lead singer Roger Daltrey.

Johnson’s musical style served as the foundation for Dr Feelgood’s early years. A style credited as one of the early influences on the British punk movement.

The Wave Pictures released a vinyl EP titled Canvey Island Baby in February 2017, which included five covers of Johnson songs and an additional song, the title track, written by the band’s singer/guitarist David Tattersall.

After seeing him in Oil City Confidential, Johnson was cast in the role of mute executioner Ser Ilyn Payne in both the first and second seasons of HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones.
