He was best known as the principal owner and chairman of the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL).
Rocky was also president of the Blackhawks’ parent company, the Wirtz Corporation, which has headquarters in Chicago.
He became the fifth owner in the franchise’s history, inheriting it from his father, Bill, after his death in 2007.
While Rocky was in control, Chicago Blackhawks made the playoffs 10 times and reached five Western Conference Finals.
The team also won three Stanley Cup titles in his tenure, bringing the Cup to the Windy City in 2010, 2013, and 2015.
Sadly, the principal owner of the Chicago Blackhawks since 2007 has died. Rocky Wirtz passed away at 70 on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at NorthShore Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois.
At this time of writing, the cause of his death has not been made public. Rocky’s son, Danny Wirtz, Blackhawks CEO said in a tweet.
“Our hearts are very heavy today. Our dad was a passionate businessman committed to making Chicago a great place to live, work and visit, but his true love was for his family and close friends.
He was a loving father, a devoted husband to Marilyn, a brother, a nephew, an uncle and a doting grandfather to his six remarkable grandchildren. His passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of many and we will miss him terribly”
