Melissa Elizabeth Lucio is the first innocent woman of Hispanic descent that is facing a death sentence in the US, specifically in Texas. She was born on July 18th, 1968 in Lubbock, Texas, and has been a survivor of lifelong repeated sexual assaults and domestic violence since the age of 6 by a family member.
Melissa Elizabeth Lucio was blamed for the death of her two-year-old daughter Mariah who fell from the staircase of a flight and wasn’t allowed to grieve the loss of her baby as the police took her in immediately and blamed her instantly for the death of her last child leaving her other 11 kids behind.
Melissa Lucio’s daughter Mariah, unfortunately, fell down the stairs of the flight they were on while moving back home with the family on February 15th, 2007. Mariah was physically disabled and that made it unstable for her while walking on the stairs tripped leading to her fall which is alleged to have been the cause of her death after sleeping and not waking up 2 days later.
According to reports, the police didn’t investigate the health history of Mariah and jumped to a conclusion that her mother Melissa Elizabeth Lucio killed her even though she was innocent. Melissa Lucio has maintained her innocence for 14 years now even though she has been sentenced to death by execution after being forced to accept what she never did.
There was no evidence that Melissa Lucio abused any of her 12 children even though she struggles to provide for her family, but was a caring mother who did her best to give her children the best in difficult times. Lucio endured sexual abuse as a child and was a victim of child marriage whose husband abandoned her and her five children at some point in her life.
Melissa Elizabeth Lucio went ahead to marry again and unfortunately, for her, her husband was abusive just like her previous marriage, and the police based on that forced her into confessing to the death of her daughter Mariah when she clearly has nothing to do with it.
Melissa Elizabeth Lucio was expected to be executed months ago but her name got removed from death row indefinitely after her lawyers appealed again against the death sentence and she now has the chance to prove her innocence that she didn’t kill her 2-year-old daughter Mariah.
Per the result of the autopsy made on Mariah after her death, it was discovered that her arm had been broken 2 to 7 weeks before her death and she also had a head injury and bruising of the kidney, lungs, and spinal cord that why the police blame her mother Melissa because she died in her sleep 2 days after falling the stairs of the flight.
Her other children have been taken away from her as some have been put up for adoption while the others have been given to some relatives or placed in the custody of the state. Malissa was imprisoned at the age of 38 and is 53 years old and that means her trial has been on and off for close to 15 years now.
