He developed a passion for acting at a younger age, was consistent throughout his career, and rose to the ranks to become one of the most sought-after actors.

During his career spanning seven decades, his TV appearances included the Brideshead Revisited miniseries, spoof soap opera Brass, courtroom drama Rumpole Of The Bailey, and long-running sci-fi, Doctor Who.

His other works include the 1966 movie, A Man For All Seasons, 1987’s East Of Ipswich, written by Monty Python star Sir Michael Palin, and the 2005 adaptation of Oliver Twist.

However, Nettleton was best known for portraying Sir Arnold Robinson in the political satire sitcom and its sequel, Yes, Prime Minister, in the 1980s.

He was one of the earliest members of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its Aldwych theatre heyday under Peter Hall and also belonged to the first group of acts to be put under long-term contracts.

On stage, he appeared in the Lyttelton Theatre of the Royal National Theatre in the productions of Harley Granville-Barker’s The Voysey Inheritance, directed by Peter Gill.

Nettleton also appeared in the Olivier Theatre in the production of Alan Bennett’s Wind in the Willows which was directed by Nicholas Hytner.
