Dumfries began the 2015–16 season on the substitution bench until breaking into the starting lineup, playing right back, and assisting Sparta Rotterdam in being a contender for promotion to the Eredivisie. Dumfries extended his contract with the team on November 7, 2015, keeping him there through 2019.

Then, on January 18, 2016, he scored his first goal as a professional in a 5-2 victory over RKC Waalwijk. Dumfries was mentioned in connection with a transfer to Serie A teams like Juventus and Milan prior to the 2020–21 season. 

Despite considering his alternatives, he ultimately decided to remain at PSV Eindhoven, which prompted the team to begin contract negotiations with the player.

Dumfries continues to serve as PSV Eindhoven’s captain at the start of the 2020–21 campaign after Roger Schmidt selected him over Pablo Rosario. He contributed to the team’s strong start to the season, which saw them finish first in the first five league games and advance to the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.

On August 14, 2021, Dumfries transferred to Serie A champions Inter Milan for 12.5 million euros, plus a bonus of 2.5 million euros for PSV Eindhoven. His former clubs will receive money as part of the transfer, according to the Dutch media. He was assigned the number two jersey when he first joined the team.

In the second half of Inter Milan’s 4-0 victory over Genoa on the first day of the 2021–22 Serie A season, Dumfries made his team debut.
