Billy Crudup attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he pursued his passion for acting and became involved with the undergraduate acting company, LAB! Theatre. Crudup was born in Manhasset, New York. His parents, Georgann (née Gaither) and Thomas Henry Crudup III, went through a divorce during his childhood but later remarried before ultimately divorcing again. Crudup has openly discussed his late father, who passed away in 2005, describing him as a persistent gambler and charismatic salesman who constantly pursued his dreams of striking it rich.
On his father’s side, Crudup can trace his lineage back to Congressman Josiah Crudup from North Carolina. His maternal grandfather was William Cotter “Billy” Gaither Jr., a renowned trial lawyer in Florida, and his maternal grandmother eventually remarried Episcopal bishop James Duncan.
