The son of William and Nellie Dooley, Vincent “Vince” Joseph Dooley was born on September 4th 1932 in Mobile, Alabama in the United States of America. Vince attended McGill Catholic High School in Mobile, where he excelled in both football and basketball. He then played football under famed Auburn University head coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan.
Vince served in the Marine Corps for two years before returning to Auburn, where he completed his undergraduate studies in business management in 1954 and his graduate studies in history in 1963. He started working for Coach Jordan as well. At the age of 31, he accepted a position as head football coach at the University of Georgia in December 1963.
Dooley coached at UGA for 25 seasons before quitting in 1988 with a 201-77-10 record. With only one losing season, he participated in twenty bowl games and won six Southeastern Conference championships (1977). He defeated Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to claim the title in 1980. From 1979 through 2003, Coach Dooley was also the UGA athletics director. Twenty-three UGA teams won national championships while he was the athletic director.
