On the fateful morning of December 28, 2023, the esteemed actor and politician, Vijayakanth, breathed his last at the age of 71 in a Chennai hospital.

Known for his dedication to Tamil cinema, he exclusively acted in Tamil films throughout his career, with many of his works being dubbed into Telugu and Hindi. His films often depicted patriotic themes, featuring him in roles as a virtuous villager or engaging in dual role performances. Despite facing challenges, such as peers refusing to collaborate and renowned filmmakers hesitating to direct him, Vijayakanth acted in over 20 films portraying a police officer.

During the late 1970s and 1980s, his early career saw a mix of successes and setbacks. After initial setbacks with films like “Agal Vilakku,” “Neerottam,” and “Saamanthippoo,” he gained widespread recognition with the success of “Sattam Oru Iruttarai” in 1981. He then starred in films reflecting revolutionary and radical themes, such as “Sivappu Malli” and “Jadhikkoru Needhi.”

Gradually transitioning to commercial films, he achieved box-office success with hits like “Nooravathu Naal” and “Vaidhegi Kaathirunthaal.” His versatile roles in the 1990s included action-packed films like “Pulan Visaranai” and “Sathriyan,” further solidifying his status as an action hero.

The 2000s showcased his continued success with films like “Vaanathai Pola,” “Vallarasu,” and “Simmasanam.” He ventured into experienced roles with movies like “Arasangam” and “Mariyadhai.” In 2010, he directed “Virudhagiri,” a remake of the French film “Taken.”

His hiatus from films ended with a cameo appearance in his son Shanmuga Pandian’s debut film, “Sagaptham” (2015). His last film, “Thamizhan Endru Sol,” was released in 2015, marking his 154th movie.

Outside of his cinematic achievements, he was involved in publicized disputes, including a notable conflict with comedic actor Vadivelu. The political landscape also saw Vijayakanth actively participating in elections, aligning his party with different political alliances.
