Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua, is a Malaysian MP who served as Special Advisor to the Minister of Labor from March 2019 to February 2020 and Member of Parliament for Batu from March 2008 to May 2018.

Tian Chua became involved in Malaysia’s reformist movement in 1999 after the dismissal of Anwar Ibrahim as deputy prime minister. He rose to fame when images of him defiantly sitting in front of a police water cannon splashed around the world’s media at the height of the movement.

Chua Tian Chang, Tian Chua is a Malaysian politician, from March 2019 he served as Special Advisor to the Minister of Labor until February 2020, and from March 2008 he was a Member of Parliament in Batu until May served.

He is an independent and was a member of the People’s Justice Party (PKR), the opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan (PH), previously Pakatan Rakyat (PR), and Balisan Alternative (BA). From April 1999 he served as Vice President of PKR from April 1999 until July 2022. From April 2004 he served as PKR’s Information Director until March 2008. and until July 2022, was Head of the Batu Division of PKR.

After returning to Malaysia in 1990, he joined Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) in its campaign against the Internal Security Act (ISA). He also began participating in the Malaysian labor movement. In 1992, he joined the Hong Kong-based Asian Monitor Resource Center (AMRC), a regional labor research NGO.

After his Hong Kong contract ended, he went to study at the Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) in The Hague, Netherlands. He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Employment and Labor Studies. Tian Chua returned to Malaysia in 1996 to continue his life’s journey as a social activist.

In 1997, Tian Chua was appointed Director of the Labor Resource Center (LRC). The center was founded by him in 1990 by a group of trade unionists and labor activists. He was also a board member of SUARAM. In 1998, SUARAM started his NGO and Opposition Forum, known as Gagasan Demokrasi Rakyat Malaysia. The forum was officially launched during the Anwar Ibrahim and Reformasi saga. Tian was elected chairman of the movement.

In 2009, Tian Chua played the lead role in a sci-fi short film titled One Future, portraying Malaysia as an Orwellian dystopia. The character’s fate in the hands of the authorities in the film reflects aspects of Tian Chua’s own public life.

Together they protested the tuition fees for foreign students introduced by the Bob Hawke administration in 1985. Tian Chua got his first taste of arrest when he was imprisoned after a demonstration in Sydney. He was also recruited by then-leader-in-exile and now President Ramos-Horta of East Timor to help produce a newsletter.

Tian Chua holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree from the University of Sydney, Australia (1984-1986) and a Bachelor of Arts (History & Philosophy of Science) from the University of New South Wales, Australia (1989). He also holds a Master of Arts (Employment & Labor Studies) from the Institute of Social Studies, in The Hague, Netherlands in 1994.

Tian Chua also received various awards including the Malaysian Human Rights Fellowship from the National Human Rights Association (HAKAM) in 1998 and the AIF Rose Award from the National Labour Federation of Denmark in 2003 for his work pertaining to labor rights in Malaysia.
