On July 1, 2007, Sidwell made a free transfer to Chelsea from Reading and was handed the number 9 jersey for the 2007–08 campaign.

In his first interview after joining Chelsea, Sidwell said that he had not gone to the club to’make up the numbers’ and that he thought training and playing with elite players like Michael Essien and Frank Lampard would only help him advance.

He participated in the first 45 minutes of the club’s preseason match against FC Zürich, which Villa lost 2-1.

He played a significant role in Brighton winning automatic promotion to the Premier League. Sidwell’s back and ankle ailments caused him to miss the entire 2017–18 campaign.

At his final club, Brighton & Hove Albion, Sidwell accepted positions as an ambassador and a youth development coach after announcing his retirement as a player in August 2018.
