Prior to relocating to Tampere, Sanna Marin lived in Espoo, Pirkkala, and Helsinki, where she was born.
When Marin was a young child, her parents divorced. At some point, her family experienced financial difficulties, and it was revealed Marin’s father whose name is Lauri Marin, battled alcoholism. Marin’s mother and her mother’s female partner raised her after her biological parents divorced.
At the age of 19, Marin received her high school diploma from Pirkkala in 2004. She supported herself while she was in school by working in a bakery and as a cashier, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in administrative science from the University of Tampere.

In 2014, Marin was elected as the SDP’s second deputy chairman. In 2015, she was elected to the Finnish Parliament as a member of the Pirkanmaa electoral district.
Four years later, she was re-elected and she was reportedly appointed Minister of Transport and Communications in 2019. On August 23, 2020, Marin was elected chair of the SDP, succeeding Antti Rinne.
