Sam Worthington Children: Meet Rocket, Racer, and River – Sam Worthington attended John Curtin College of the Arts, a drama school in Fremantle, Western Australia, where he studied drama but did not graduate.
When he graduated from college, his father gave him $400 and told him to “work his way home” in Cairns, Queensland.
He started working in construction and odd jobs before settling in Sydney. He auditioned for the National Institute of Dramatic Art at the age of 19, while working as a bricklayer, and was accepted with a scholarship.
Alongside Adam Garcia, Worthington starred in the Australian dance movie Bootmen. In Australia’s low-budget comedy Gettin’ Square, he also had a leading role.
In Somersault, Worthington had a significant part and won the AFI Award for Best Lead Actor. He gained widespread recognition in Australia for his part as Howard in the highly regarded Australian TV series Love My Way, in which he portrayed the main love interest of the female lead. In 2006, he played the title role in an Australian film adaptation of Macbeth.
A string of minor roles in the Hollywood production The Great Raid, which was shot in Australia, served as the launchpad for Worthington’s international acting career. He auditioned for the James Bond role in Casino Royale.
Worthington portrayed Marcus Wright, a cyborg in Terminator Salvation who works with people despite their misgivings. The science fiction movie Avatar, which was directed by James Cameron and starred Worthington as Jake Sully, a paraplegic former U.S. Marine who finds himself in the middle of a conflict between his own species and the native Na’vi people of the moon Pandora, was his subsequent endeavor.
With box office receipts of more than $2.8 billion (or $3.4 billion when adjusted for inflation), the movie became the highest-earning movie of all time.
Alongside Liam Neeson, Worthington starred in the Clash of the Titans sequel Wrath of the Titans in 2012. Like in the first movie, Worthington portrayed Perseus, a demigod and the son of Zeus. In Call of Duty: Black Ops II, he also played the character of Alex Mason again.
Worthington played Nick Cassidy in Asger Leth’s suspense-thriller Man on a Ledge, which was released in 2012. Despite the negative reviews the movie received from critics, Worthington’s performance was praised; The New Zealand Herald called him “suitably terrified.”
In the Manhunt: Unabomber television series on the Discovery Channel, Worthington played Jim Fitzgerald. Worthington played Ray Monroe in the 2019 thriller film Fractured on Netflix.
