Before transitioning to commercial radio at age 16, Matterface began working in sports radio in 1992 for a nearby hospital radio station called OHR.

In 1998, he worked for BBC Radio Kent. In 1999, he began working for Capital Radio Sport. From 2001 through 2007, Matterface presented the breakfast show and a number of sports-related programming at the south coast radio station 107.4 The Quay.

Matterface worked on the Sky channel Bravo between 2006 and 2007, appearing in weekly segments on the football-themed television program Football Italia.

In the middle of the 2006 match-fixing scandal, he showed brief reels called “What’s a Matter You?” that showed the Serie A game week’s funnier incidents.

When the free-to-air network Channel 5 bought the rights to Italian football in 2007, the section was eliminated.

In July 2007 he began hosting Sky Sports News, and he left in late 2010. On January 12, 2018, it was officially announced that Matterface would take over for Matt Chapman as the commentator for ITV’s Dancing on Ice.

ITV confirmed that Matterface would take over Clive Tyldesley’s position as primary football and England pundit for the start of the 2020–2021 season on July 14, 2020.
