She was a quarter-finalist in singles at the 1979 French Open, which was her best performance in grand slam. After defeating Chris O’Neil, she began her second round match against Ilana Kloss with a 6-0 win in her first set. Her South African opponent, however, was injured. She defeated eighth seed Betty Stove, in straight sets, in the third round. Then, she was beaten by Chris Evert, the eventual tournament champion, in the quarter-finals.
At the 1978 Wimbledon Championships Gerulaitis reached the fourth round of singles and beat Marita Redondo (16th seed). She lost just two games.
