Prior to her breakthrough performance as Anita in West Side Story (1961), which brought her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and made her the first Latin American woman to win an Academy Award, Moreno’s early credits included supporting parts in the beloved musical films Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and The King and I (1956).
Popi (1969), Carnal Knowledge (1971), The Four Seasons (1981), I Like It Like That (1994), and the cult classic Slums of Beverly Hills (1998) are some of her other motion pictures. In Steven Spielberg’s 2021 adaptation of West Side Story, Moreno played Valentina.
She won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance in Terrence McNally’s 1975 musical The Ritz, in which she played Googie Gomez.
In the 1976 Richard Lester-directed picture, she played the same part again, earning a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress. She also appeared in Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple in 1985 and Lorraine Hansberry’s The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window in 1964.
She starred as Sister Peter Marie Reimondo in the HBO series Oz (1997–2003) and as a cast member of the children’s television series The Electric Company (1971–1977).
For her work on The Rockford Files in 1978 and The Muppet Show in 1977, she was awarded two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards.
