Heineman, who was also its chief executive officer, founded Contraband Entertainment in 1999. The company also developed original games and ports to other platforms for developers. Heineman led projects such as Myth III: The Wolf Age and Activision Anthology. She also developed Mac OS ports for Aliens vs. predator II, Baldur’s gate II, and Heroes of Might and Magic IV. She also did consulting work for other companies during this period. She was the “Senior Engineer III”, an upgrade of the engine code for Barking Lizards Technologies, Ubisoft, and optimized code for Sensory Sweep Studios. She also served as the senior software architect for Bloomberg L.P., Amazon, and provided training in Xbox 360 development for Microsoft’s studios. Heineman, in addition to her technical role at Amazon, was also the “Transgender chair” for Amazon’s LGBTQ+ group Glamazon.

Heineman was also responsible for The Bard’s Tale III, Thief Of Fate, Dragon Wars and Tass Times In Tonetown. Heineman wanted to go back to her small-team roots and left Interplay in 1995 to co-found Logicware. She was chief technology officer and led programmer. Heineman was responsible for the company’s porting activities. These included Out of This World and Shattered Steel as well as Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (which was canceled) and Half-Life on Mac OS.

Heineman has been part of the advisory board of the Video Game History Museum since 2011, and is part of the board of directors of LGBTQ+ organization GLAAD.
