Ray Guy biography
Former professional American football punter Ray Guy played for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders in the National Football League. (NFL).
When the Oakland Raiders selected Guy with the 23rd overall pick in the 1973 NFL Draft, he was already a senior at the University of Southern Mississippi and had already been named an undisputed All-American. He was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft for the first time ever as a pure punter.
Guy, an eight-time NFL All-Pro, is widely regarded as the best punter to ever punt a football. While attending Thomson High School in Thomson, Georgia, Guy participated in four sports.
While leading Thomson to Georgia Class A state football championships in 1967 and 1968, Guy, the team’s kicker, and punter, also played quarterback, safety, linebacker, and tailback. Guy averaged 49.7 yards per punt in 1968.
The day after the 1968 state championship football game, Guy played in a Thomson basketball game and scored 39 points despite not having practiced. In the 1969 state playoff semifinals for Thomson, Guy threw a scoreless 15-inning game.
The Georgia native played high school sports from 1969 to 1972, winning All-America honors, before being chosen in the first round of the 1973 NFL Draft.
Throughout his NFL career, he represented the Oakland Raiders by donning the silver and black from 1973 to 1986.
He was selected for eight different All-Pro teams over the course of his career, including the first team each year from 1973 to 1978 and the second team two years later.
A member of the NFL’s 1970s All-Decade Team, 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, and 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, he also participated in seven Pro Bowls.
