She was born on May 26, 1972, in Bethnal Green, London to Pat Harris and Albert Harris. Patsy attended Globe Primary School and then Haggerston Girls Secondary School before enrolling at the Anna Scher Theatre school.
Patsy developed a love for acting at a younger age because she was bullied at school, and she said that acting was a form of escape. At age 6, Patsy appeared in a West End production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Palmer has said that she has been a drug and alcohol addict. She revealed that she started alcohol and drugs at the age of 10 and her addiction lasted for 24 years. In 2010, she stated that she had been clean of drugs and alcohol since September 2004 and that “We don’t have drink in our house”.

After Patsy split with Nick, she married Richard Merkell in 2000. He was born in 1965 in London, United Kingdom. The 58-year-old is a cab driver.
Patsy and Richard had been friends for 14 years before they got together. Patsy credits Richard for helping her overcome her drug and alcohol addictions.
