During the 2018–19 Liiga season, Puistola made his Liiga debut with Tappara, appearing in 16 games and recording one assist. The Carolina Hurricanes selected him with the 73rd overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

During his second season with Tappara in 2019-20, Puistola played 24 games, notching just two assists, following a time in the Mestis, Puistola was loaned to fellow Liiga teams, Jukurit and KooKoo, to end the season.

Puistola signed a two-year deal with JYP Jyväskylä and transferred there on March 26, 2020, leaving Tappara out of contract.
