Nanaia Mahuta attended Kura Kaupapa Rakaumanga school in Huntly and later Waikato Diocesan School for Girls. She studied law at the University of Waikato, but failed 4 of her seven papers and had to drop out.
Nanaia then studied social anthropology and Maori business development at the University of Auckland, graduating with an MA (Hons). She titled her 1995 master’s thesis as Te poukai o Waahi: historical background to the Waahi poukai.
Nanaia Mahuta is a tribal member of Waikato-Tainui, Ngati Maniapoto, and Ngati Manu and her parliamentary experience have enabled her to contribute to the collective aspirations of Maori and all New Zealanders.

She’s a Member of Parliament for Hauraki-Waikato. Nanaia is also the Minister of Local Government, and Associate Minister for Maori Development. In 2016, she acquired a Maori facial tattoo (moko kauae) and became the first female MP to wear one in the New Zealand parliament.
In 2018, she was listed as one of the BBC’s 100 Women, and also in 2020, Nanaia Mahuta became the first woman to hold the portfolio as the Foreign Affairs minister. As of October 2022, the Foreign Affairs minister had an estimated net worth of about $1.5 million
