The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Harris with the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. The first running back chosen was him.

Harris inked a $13.1 million rookie deal with the Steelers on May 25, 2021, which includes a $6.9 million signing bonus spread over four years.

Harris had 142 all-purpose yards in Week 3’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, with 14 catches out of 19 targets. These were the second-highest number of targets for a running back since 1992 (the year the data was initially kept), and they tied the NFL record for the most catches in a game for a rookie.

Harris gained 122 yards on 23 runs and a rushing touchdown in the 27–19 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 5.

It was his first-ever game with over 100 yards of rushes. After Franco Harris in 1972, he became the first rookie for the Steelers to achieve 100 yards rushing in his first five games and score a touchdown on the ground.
