Mike Nussbaum died of natural causes on Saturday, December 23, 2023, six days short of his 100th birthday. His daughter Karen confirmed the news to various outlets, saying the cause of death was “old age”

“He was a good father and a good man who raised us to care about other people and respect other people and care about justice,” she said.

Mike Nussbaum was acknowledged by the Actor’s Equity Association union multiple times in the past several years as the oldest professional actor in the country.

Born on December 29, 1923, in Chicago, Nussbaum first acted in summer camps. He didn’t pursue acting full-time until he was in his 40s, working for a time as an exterminator.

In 1984, Nussbaum won a Drama Desk Award for his performance in David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross,” which won a Pulitzer Prize the same year.

He played book publisher, Bob Drimmer in “Fatal Attraction” (1987), a school principal in “Field of Dreams” (1989), and alien jeweler Gentle Rosenburg in “Men in Black” (1997).

He performed into his 90s, including a 2017 role as Albert Einstein in “Relativity” at Northlight Theatre in suburban Skokie, where he also served briefly as artistic director.

Though Nussbaum was primarily a stage actor, he appeared in films like “House of Games”, “Things Change”, “Harry and Tonto”, “Losing Josiah”, and “Steal Big Steal Little”

On the television side, he had turns in The Equalizer, The X-Files, Brooklyn Bridge, Separate but Equal, Frasier, L.A. Law, 227, The Commish. and Early Edition.
