Mike Elko played basketball while he attended South Brunswick High School. He also played as a quarterback for the school’s football team before he graduated in 1995.

In 1994, the Greater Middlesex Conference coaches named him the league’s best quarterback. In 2012, he was placed into the school’s athletic hall of fame.

After earning his degree, he played football with the University of Pennsylvania Penn Quakers, who won the Ivy League championship in 1998.

Dave Clawson was Elko’s coach for twelve seasons. He played three seasons with Clawson at Wake Forest, five seasons with him at Bowling Green, and two seasons with him at both Fordham and Richmond.

Elko’s Wake Forest defense finished in the top 20 in terms of turnovers, scoring defense, red zone defense, sacks, and defensive touchdowns scored in the 2016 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
