Michael Flanagan was born in Whitechapel, East London, and raised in Bethnal Green. His father, Jim Flanagan, was a welder and later fish hauler, from County Donegal, Ireland. His father was involved in a misdemeanor and later served a short prison sentence.

As a sensitive and thoughtful child, Michael Flanagan was eager to leave London’s East End. At the age of thirteen, he joined the Youth Socialist League. He was a bright student, but he started skipping classes because of his homework and dropped out of school at the age of 15 without a degree.
