Severson, Doyle, and a third defendant, were convicted of second-degree murder in March 1990 and sentenced to fifteen years to life imprisonment. Both girls accused Avila of having sex and said that she had broken up too many relationships. They then placed Avila face-down in six inches of water. The two placed a log of approximately 100 pounds and four feet long on Avila’s body to hold it down.
