Michael Punke is one of the most popular and richest Jurist who was born on December 7, 1964 in Torrington, Wyoming, United States. Punke also wrote the introduction for a modern reprint of Mari Sandoz’s 1954 book, The Buffalo Hunters : The Story of the Hide Men.

After reading some lines from a history book on Hugh Glass, Punke said that he had the idea to write the novel in an airplane. Punke also worked at Mayer Brown when the book was first published (1997). He would arrive at work at 5:00 am to start writing pages, then go back to work for about eight to ten more hours. It took Punke four years to finish the book. His brother Tim said that Punke contracted pneumonia at least four times. Punke did extensive research on Glass and even set up and tested real hunting traps. The book was published in 2002 with little fanfare. However, Punke was able sell the movie rights. Alejandro G. Inarritu, the director, discovered the novel and fought to make it a movie. Other directors, such as Park Chan-Wook, and producers like Megan Ellison, were also attached.

Punke has been a partner at the law firm of Mayer Brown, resident in the Washington, D.C. office and working on various matters involving international trade law. In the years of 2003 to 2009, Punke served as a consultant on various public policy matters and was also based in Missoula, Montana. In February 2017, Punke joined Amazon Web Services as Vice President for Global Public Policy.

In 2006, Punke published a non-fiction book, via Hachette Books, that covered a mining disaster that occurred in North Butte, Montana during 1917. The book was a finalist for the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award. A reprint edition was also published in 2007. The book has received favorable reviews from Publishers Weekly, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews and other sources.

Punke was appointed a Senior Policy Advisor to the Office of the United States Trade Representative in 1995-96. He advised the USTR on issues that ranged from intellectual property law to trade law to agricultural law. Punke also worked in the private sector on international trade issues, including as a partner at Mayer, Brown, Rowe, & Maw, Washington, D.C. Punke was a consultant on public policy issues from Missoula, Montana, between 2003 and 2009.

He is also a professor, author, consultant, lawyer, and former Deputy United States Trade Rep and US Ambassador to Geneva, Switzerland’s World Trade Organization. He is currently Vice President of Public policy for Amazon Web Services. He is most well-known for his novel, The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge, which he wrote in 2002.
