R. Sarathkumar was born on July 14, 1954, in New Delhi to the Tamil family of Ramanathan and Pushpaleela. His father, Ramanathan, worked for the radio (All India Radio) in India before jo ining the Indian Press Information Agency, and his mother, Pushpaleela, was a homemaker.
