Olivia Thirlby born on October 6, 1986, is an American actress known for her roles as Leah in the comedy-drama film Juno (2007), as Natalie in The Darkest Hour (2011) and as Judge Cassandra Anderson in Dredd (2012).
Olivia Thirlby was born in New York City to an advertising executive mother and a contractor father. She grew up in East Village in Manhattan, where she attended Friends Seminary in the Gramercy neighborhood and graduated in a class of 57 students.
She has also attended the French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts in upstate New York and the Usudun Creative and Performing Arts Center. She took courses at the American Globe Theatre, briefly attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and completed a stage combat course at the British Academy of Stage, Screen and Combat (BASSC).
While in school, Olivia Thirlby starred in The Secret. In 2006, she made her film debut in ‘United 93’ and television debut in ‘Kidnapped’. In 2007, she played Leah in JUNO. Around this time, she and her Juno co-star Elliot Page were set to play their respective title characters in Jack and Diane, about two young women who fall in love and unleash their bestiality in one role.
She played the marijuana-smoker “Popular” Stephanie from New York City in the mid-1990s historical drama The Wackness, which opened in U.S. theaters on July 3, 2008 and won the Sundance Audience Award. Olivia Thirlby was cast as the girlfriend of Seth Rogen’s character in the Judd Apatow-produced David Gordon Green-directed stoner comedy Pineapple Express, but she was replaced by Amber Heard after rehearsals for the film. She reunited with David Gordon Green in the animated television pilot Good Vibes.
She made her stage debut at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York City in the play Farragut North, written by Beau Willimon. The Off-Broadway production ran from October 22, 2008 to November 29, 2008, officially opening on November 12, and moving to the Geffen Playhouse in June 2009.

She speaks clips in promotional videos for Jay Asher’s novel 13 Reasons Why, which have been posted regularly on her YouTube since October 2008. She played the role of Judge Cassandra Anderson in the 2012 film adaptation Judge Dredd, which starred Karl Urban in the title role. She next appeared in the indie film Nobody Walks, starring John Krasinski and Rosemarie DeWitt.
In 2016, Olivia Thirlby played young lawyer Lucy Kittredge in the Amazon Studios legal series Goliath. In 2017, she played the lead role in the thriller film Damascus Cover and in 2018, she starred in The White Orchid. She also played the lead role in 2019’s Above the Shadows and played MCC Minister Rebecca Dowley in the 2019 Showtime drama series The L Word.
Olivia Thirlby is a participant in iO Tillett Wright’s Self-Evident Truths project. She publicly came out as bisexual in a 2011 interview with Brooklyn Magazine, and she chose to participate in a photo project focused on people who were “not 100 percent heterosexual”. She married Jacques Pienaar on December 28, 2014, she met him on the set of the 2012 film Dredd.
