Jacob William Rees-Mogg born on 24 May 1969, is a British politician who has been a Member of Parliament for North East Somerset since 2010.
Now a back-venture, he served as House Majority Leader and Council Chair from 2019-2022, Secretary of State for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency from February-September 2022, and also served as Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Jacob Rees-Mogg, a member of the Conservative Party, chaired the Eurosceptic European Research Group (ERG) in 2018-2019 and has been associated with socially conservative views. He was born in Hammersmith, London and was educated at Westminster Underschool, Eton College and Trinity College, Oxford, where he read history and was president of the Oxford University Conservative Society.
He then worked for Lloyd George Management in the City of London and Hong Kong before co-founding hedge fund management firm Somerset Capital Management LLP in 2007. He amassed a huge fortune. As of 2016, the sum was estimated at between £55 million and £150 million, including his wife’s expected share of inheritance.
Jacob Rees-Mogg ran unsuccessfully in the 1997 and 2001 general elections, but was elected to the North East Somerset County Council in 2010. He was re-elected in both 2015 and 2017 with high vote share, but in 2019 both had low vote share. Within the Conservative Party, he joined the traditionalist and socially conservative Cornerstone Group.
Jacob Rees-Mogg was one of the most defiant Conservative MPs during David Cameron’s tenure, and opposed the whip’s appointment on several issues. He became known for his filibuster. A Eurosceptic, he proposed an electoral deal between the Conservative Party and the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and called for the UK to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum. As a member of the European Research Group (ERG), Mr. Jacob Rees-Mogg was elected chairman in 2018.
He gained support for his opposition to Prime Minister Theresa May’s proposed Checkers Agreement and Britain’s Brexit deal. He was promoted to lead the Conservative Party as a candidate to succeed Theresa May. Instead, he endorsed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Leadership Contest. After Boris Johnson was elected Conservative leader and appointed Prime Minister, he appointed Jacob Rees-Mogg Speaker of the House of Commons and Speaker of the Council.
In February 2022, Boris Johnson appointed Jacob Rees-Mogg as Secretary of State for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency. After Boris Johnson resigned in July 2022, Jacob Rees-Mogg backed Liz Truss’s attempt to become Conservative leader. After Truss was appointed Prime Minister, she appointed him as Secretary of Commerce. Shortly after Truss left office on October 25, 2022, he stepped down as Secretary of Commerce.
Jacob Rees-Mogg has been described as a persuasive politician with an anachronistic attitude. Critics see him as a reactionary figure. His traditionalists were said to obscure controversial political views, some of which made him the target of organized protests. His anachronistic style has led him to be called an “honorary member of the 18th century”.
