In February 2022, Boris Johnson appointed Jacob Rees-Mogg as Secretary of State for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency. After Boris Johnson resigned in July 2022, Jacob Rees-Mogg backed Liz Truss’s attempt to become Conservative leader. After Truss was appointed Prime Minister, she appointed him as Secretary of Commerce. Shortly after Truss left office on October 25, 2022, he stepped down as Secretary of Commerce.

Jacob Rees-Mogg has been described as a persuasive politician with an anachronistic attitude. Critics see him as a reactionary figure. His traditionalists were said to obscure controversial political views, some of which made him the target of organized protests.
