The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Whitehead in the fourth round with the 117th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was the 10th safety drafted in 2018.
On May 10, 2018, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Whitehead to a four-year contract. In the 2019 season, he recorded his first career interception in a 55–40 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

In the 2022 season, Whitehead played in Super Bowl LV, a 31–9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. He recorded two solo tackles in the game.
On March 17, 2022, Whitehead signed a two-year contract with the New York Jets. In Week 1 of the 2023 season, he intercepted Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen three times.
