During the 2011-12 season, Kleber made his professional debut for the s.Oliver Baskets, a team based in his hometown of Würzburg, in Germany’s top-flight Basketball Bundesliga.

He was a role player on the team in his first year, averaging 7 minutes per game. In his second season, he developed into an important member of the team, averaging 9.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

He declared for the NBA draft in 2012 before withdrawing his name from consideration. In 2014, he became auto-eligible for the NBA draft, but he was not selected by any team.

He signed a two-year contract with Spanish club Obradoiro CAB during the 2014 off-season. He was named MVP of round 25 of the 2014-15 ACB season after scoring 36 points against Fuenlabrada. Kleber appeared in 33 games that season, averaging 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Kleber returned to Germany on July 1, 2015, and signed a two-year contract with Bayern Munich. He appeared in 24 Bundesliga games for Bayern, including 17 starts, in 2015-16, averaging 8.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. During the 2016-17 Bundesliga season, he appeared in 37 games (37 starts), averaging 9.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.

Kleber signed with the Dallas Mavericks on July 13, 2017. In October 2017, he made his NBA debut against the Houston Rockets. Maxi Kleber progressed from bench player to key rotation player in his first three seasons, increasing his points, rebounds, assists, and blocks per game totals in each of his first three seasons. On July 10, 2019, the Mavericks re-signed him.

On 21 February 2020, Kleber scored a career high 26 points against the Orlando Magic in a 122-106 victory. Maxi averaged a career-high 9.1 points per game in the 2019-20 season. With 74 games played, he led the league in games played and finished 19th in blocks.

Kleber scored 25 points and hit eight 3-pointers in a 110-104 win over the Utah Jazz in Game 2 of the first round of the playoffs on April 18, 2022. He signed a four-year contract extension with the Mavericks in the offseason of 2022.

Kleber has also represented the senior German national team. He was a member of the team during the EuroBasket qualification rounds in 2014. Kleber was forced to withdraw from the 2020 Summer Olympics due to an Achilles injury.
