Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1969) is a singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress from the United States. Guinness World Records has dubbed her the “Songbird Supreme” for her songwriting, five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, and signature use of the whistle register.

Carey is acknowledged for influencing the vocal style in current music, fusing hip-hop and pop music through her collaborations, and popularising the usage of remixes. She has also been dubbed the “Queen of Christmas” due to the longevity of her holiday music, particularly the 1994 song “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which is the best-selling holiday song by a female artist.

Who is Mariah Carey?

Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, New York on March 27, 1969. Her name comes from the song “They Call the Wind Maria,” which was originally performed in the 1951 Broadway show Paint Your Waggon. She is the youngest of three children born to Patricia, an Irish-born former opera singer and vocal instructor, and Alfred Roy Carey, an African-American and Afro-Venezuelan aeronautical engineer.

Her Venezuelan grandpa, Francisco Nez, acquired the surname Carey after emigrating to New York. Patricia’s family disowned her because she married a black man. Racial issues kept the Careys from assimilating into their society. Their neighbors poisoned the family dog and set fire to their car while they resided in Huntington.

Carey had limited contact with her father after her parents’ divorce, and her mother worked multiple jobs to maintain the family. Carey spent most of her time at home alone and began singing at the age of three, often emulating her mother’s Italian rendition of Verdi’s opera Rigoletto. Alison, Mariah’s older sister, moved in with their father, while Morgan and Mariah lived with their mother.

She excelled in the arts, such as music and writing, during her early school years. Carey began writing poetry and lyrics while she was a student at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, from which she graduated in 1987.
