Katie Arrington (born December 6 1970) is an American politician who was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives in the 94th District from 2017 until 2019. She was defeated by the former South Carolina Governor and incumbent Congressman Mark Sanford in the Republican primary for the 1st congressional district in South Carolina on June 12, 2018. In November of 2018, Arrington lost the general primary in the general election to Democrat Joe Cunningham.
In November of 2018, Arrington was defeated in the general election by Joe Cunningham, the Democratic opponent, in a massive surprise. Although Arrington was able to win five of the five counties in the district however, she failed to overcome a 17,000-vote gap in Charleston County. This is four times the margin of 4000 votes.
Arrington announced she would run for Congress in South Carolina’s 1st congressional district, challenging Mark Sanford for his seat in the House in the 2018 election cycle. The Republican primary drew national media attention as it was seen as a test of how independent of President Donald Trump a Republican representative could be. Sanford had repeatedly criticized Trump since he took office. Only four Republican House members voted against Trump’s interests more often than Sanford. During the campaign, Arrington ran ads criticizing Sanford for being insufficiently supportive of Trump. Her predecessor in the state house, Jenny Horne, had given up her seat to mount an unsuccessful challenge to Sanford in 2016.
Arrington and her first husband have three children. As of 2019, she is married to Rob Arrington, the owner of RLA Associates.
On June 22nd, 2018 Arrington was severely wounded in an auto accident, when an unintentional driver who was driving the wrong direction on a highway struck her car. Arrington was injured by a back injury and rib fracture and was required to have a portion from her small intestine as well as colon removed.
