Growing up, Abdul-Jabbar lived in the Dyckman Street projects in the Inwood neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, which he moved to with his family at the age of three in 1950.

At birth, Abdul-Jabbar was an exceptionally large baby, weighing 12 pounds 11 ounces and measuring 22 and a half inches in length. Throughout his childhood, Abdul-Jabbar was always taller than his peers, reaching a height of 5 feet 8 inches by the age of nine. Despite his remarkable height, Abdul-Jabbar experienced depression as a teenager due to the attention and comments he received about his size.

By the time he reached the eighth grade, Abdul-Jabbar had grown to a towering 6 feet 8 inches and was already able to perform a slam dunk on the basketball court. His height and athletic abilities would later make him one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
