Gvardiol began playing football at the age of eight with the youth team of Trešnjevka, Croatia. He started to play a defensive role for DInamo academy in 2010. He caught the eyes from big clubs including Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Borrusia Dortmund, Lille and others.

During the last quarter of 2019, he was called to the senior team and signed for RB Leipzig in 2021. He made his debut in 20th August, 2021 and has become a key player in the first team.

In October, 2019, he got his first call up into the Croatia national U-21 team. He was called up and included in the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. On 6th June, he made is first debut for the senior team against Belgium.
