Joseph Koo Wife: Was Joseph Koo Married? – Joseph Koo was born in Guangzhou, China, and moved to Hong Kong when he was 17.

At the age of 17, he began learning music by taking piano lessons from a Filipino music teacher who was also teaching singing to Koo’s sister.

Sir Run Run Shaw sponsored Koo’s attendance at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in the early 1960s. Following graduation, he returned to Hong Kong and worked for both the Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest film studios, scoring films such as Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon for Bruce Lee in 1972.

Koo joined TVB in 1973 as their director of music, where he stayed until he immigrated to Canada in the 1990s.

Over the course of his career, Joseph Koo has written over 1,200 songs, many of which are now considered classic Cantopop.

He only has two notable works as a lyricist, both of which are very short in length and total word count. The first was a children’s song about the ten numbers, and the second was the ‘Goodnight’ jingle for Enjoy Yourself Tonight.

In 1961, he wrote and recorded his first published song, “Dream,” which was performed by his sister Koo Mei. “Suburban Road” became another hit for him later in his career.

He wrote the first Cantonese TV theme song, The Fatal Irony, in 1974, which became one of the first popular Cantopop songs.

In 1982, Joseph Koo was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). The Hong Kong Government awarded him the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 1998.

Other honors include the Music Accomplishment Award (from the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Ltd.), the Highest Honour Award (from the RTHK Ten Best Chinese Music Program), the Best Music Award, and Best Lyric Award (from the Asia Film Festival), Hong Kong Film Awards, Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards, and the Best Music Award and Best Lyric Award (from the Asia Film Festival).

Joseph Koo moved to Canada in the 1990s, but remained active in Hong Kong music. In 2007, he composed the theme song for The Drive of Life, a TVB drama commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover.

From November 30 to December 3, 2012, he held a concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum called “Joseph Koo Concert 2012,” which featured many singers such as Adam Cheng, George Lam, Teresa Cheung, and Anthony Wong.

In 2015, he announced his retirement as a conductor and stated that he would reduce his musical works significantly and become an oil painter like his sister. Joseph Koo died on January 3, 2023, at the age of 91, in Vancouver, Canada.
