Since 2015, Ernst, a former military officer, has represented Iowa as a junior US senator. She is a Republican who formerly held the position of auditor of Montgomery County from 2004 to 2011 and member of the Iowa State Senate from 2011 to 2014.

Ernst is the fourth-ranking Republican in the Senate and has served as the chair of the Senate Republican Policy Committee since 2023.

Ernst enlisted in the United States Army Reserve upon his graduation from Iowa State University. From 1993 until 2015, she served in the Iowa Army National Guard, where she was a lieutenant colonel when she retired.

She commanded the 1168th Transportation Company in Kuwait during the Iraq War and subsequently oversaw the largest unit in the Iowa Army National Guard, the 185th Combat Sustainment Support unit, at Camp Dodge.

Ernst is also a Columbus State University Master of Public Administration graduate. Ernst was chosen to serve as Montgomery County Auditor in 2004. In 2008, she was elected again.

Ernst was reelected to the Iowa State Senate in 2012 after winning a special election in 2011. She was the representative for Southwest Iowa’s District 12.

Ernst became the first Republican to win the US Senate seat since 1978 when he defeated longtime Democratic Senator Tom Harkin in the 2014 election.

Despite her harsh criticism of President Barack Obama, she has been described as President Donald Trump’s dependable ally and was rumored to be his running partner for the 2016 election.

In November 2018, Ernst was chosen as the Senate Republican Conference’s vice chair. In 2020, she won reelection by 6.6 points over Democratic candidate Theresa Greenfield.
