John H. Hammergren is an American businessman. He is best known for his role as Chairman and CEO of McKesson Corporation since 1999. On November 1, 2018 John Hammergren announced his plan to retire. On April 1, 2019, he officially retired from McKesson. He was succeeded by Brian Tyler.
As of 2005 John Hammergren was elected to the Hewlett-Packard’s board of Directors. Hammergren served until 2013 , when the board was disbanded. The New York City’s public pension funds backed the effort to remove the two Hammergren along with G. Kennedy Thompson because of their backing of the company’s purchase of British software company Autonomy in addition to “their failure to protect investors from costly, misguided acquisitions.” Hammergren was not able to get more than 60% of the votes to re-elect her at an annual shareholder election and then was forced to resign.
Hammergren was elected the president as well as CEO at McKesson in 2001. He was also elected the chairmanship in 2002. In 2017 McKesson participated in several lawsuits against the state Arkansas regarding the supply of vecuronium chloride. The lawsuits claimed McKesson directors did not pay time to monitor opioid sales following the 2008 settlement centered around the lack of oversight of the shipping. The suit involved 10 current as well as former directors and executives which included Hammergren. Hammergren was criticised for his compensation due to the controversy surrounding the company’s involvement in the opioid crisis and for not reporting suspicious prescriptions for opioids. Hammergren’s bonus payout was increased to $1.1 million in the year 2017. In 2017, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which owns shares of the company, expressed their opinion on the bonus pay problem: “It is staggering that Hammergren received a $1.1 million boost to his bonus just months after the company announced it had reached a record $150 million settlement with the DEA in a year the company faces mounting litigation, negative press and Congressional scrutiny.” The union called on shareholders to reject Hammergren’s pay package during the annual shareholders’ meeting.
In June 2014, Glenn Gray, a former employee at McKesson returned to the company’s annual meeting to ask that Hammergren’s $292 million severance package be redistributed to low-paid employees. The proposal was defeated by the shareholders. He had also earlier, in 2013, 4 months before being relieved from his duties at McKesson, asked for wage raises during the company’s annual meeting too.
