The son of Patrick Fashanu, a Nigerian lawyer who resided in the UK, and Pearl Gopal, a British Guiana nurse, Fashanu was born in Kensington, London. He and his older brother Justin were both taken to a Barnardo’s care home when his parents divorced.

He and his brother were raised at Shropham, close to Attleborough, Norfolk, after being placed in Alf and Betty Jackson’s care as foster children when they were five years old.

During a professional football career that lasted over seventeen years, from 1978 until 1995, he first gained notoriety while playing as a center-forward. Most notably, he played for Wimbledon F.C. for eight years during which time he won the FA Cup in 1988 and scored more than 100 goals throughout all games.
