Joel Matip Wife: Meet Larissa Matip – Before joining VfL Bochum in 1997, Joel Matip started his career with SC Weitmar 45. Matip spent three years in the VfL Bochum youth teams before Schalke 04 spotted him in July 2000.
On October 27, 2009, Matip made his professional debut in a Regionalliga West game against 1. FC Saarbrucken. On November 7, 2009, against Bayern Munich, he made his Bundesliga debut for Schalke. He scored the game-tying goal and was later named pl ayer of the match.
Following a successful debut with the first team, Matip played defensive midfield regularly for Schalke for the rest of the 2009–10 campaign, adding two more goals against 1. FC Koln and Eintracht Frankfurt. Matip and Schalke agreed to a three-and-a-half-year contract on March 2, 2010.
After his contract with Schalke expired, Matip announced on February 15, 2016, that he had signed a four-year pre-contract agreement to join Liverpool on a free transfer.
On August 23, 2016, in the Reds’ 5-0 League Cup victory over Burton Albion, he made his Liverpool debut. On October 29, he scored the club’s first goal in a 4-2 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Selhurst Park. Matip’s performances in November earned him the title of Standard Chartered Player of the Month.
Matip was removed from the match against Manchester United on January 15, 2017, because FIFA had not yet provided Liverpool with a complete explanation of his eligibility and because the Cameroon Football Federation had not affirmed that Matip could play club football during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Overall, Matip was regarded as a key player in enhancing Liverpool’s defense during the 2016–17 season, which had faced severe criticism before the season.
Matip was selected by Cameroon on December 23, 2009, for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, but he later decided against going.
After meeting with the team ahead of a friendly match against Italy on March 3, 2010, Matip, then 18 years old, decided to play his first game for Cameroon on March 2.
He debuted in the game against Italy and later represented Cameroon at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He also traveled with the Cameroon team to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he played twice and scored the team’s sole goal of the competition against the host team Brazil.
Matip was chosen in January 2017 for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, but he declined the call-up. Later it was discovered that Matip had left the national team while still playing for Schalke, but had not notified the Cameroonian Football Association in writing as required by FIFA.
FIFA clarified the situation, but Matip was unable to play for Liverpool during that time. He then skipped a match against Manchester United in the Premier League and a match against Plymouth Argyle in the third round of the FA Cup.
Matip gave his dissatisfaction with the organization of the national team and his negative experiences with the coaching staff as the reasons for his retirement.
