Joe Marler has described his time in the lower tiers as a necessary learning curve that allowed him to learn all the tricks of the prop trade. He specifically mentions technical advice on scrummaging from a former coach named Bobby Walsh.

His knowledge at this level has enabled him to cover the tighthead side of the scrum on occasion.

Marler made his debut for the Harlequins in the EPCR Challenge Cup final against Stade Français in May 2011. The following season, Marler played a key role in Harlequins’ first ever League title, starting in the 2011-12 Premiership final victory over Leicester Tigers.

Marler captained Harlequins for the 2014-2015 season, taking over for Chris Robshaw, who was unavailable due to England’s World Cup commitments. In the following season, Joe Marler handed over the captaincy of Harlequins to teammate Danny Care.

Marler signed a new contract to stay at the club in January 2016, and later that year he started for the Harlequins, who were defeated by Montpellier in the final of the EPCR Challenge Cup.

Marler won his second league title on June 26, 2021, starting for the Harlequins, who defeated Exeter Chiefs 40-38 in the highest scoring Premiership final ever.

He played for England U20 in the 2009 Six Nations Under 20s Championship and was part of the squad that finished second to New Zealand in the 2009 IRB Junior World Championship.

He also scored a try in England’s fourth-place finish at the 2010 IRB Junior World Championship against South Africa.

Marler was selected for the 2012 summer tour of South Africa and made his senior debut against the Springboks on June 9, 2012.

Joe Marler was named to the squad for the 2013 series against Argentina and later became a regular. Marler was named to Stuart Lancaster’s squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and he played for the hosts in the pool stage before they were eliminated.

Marler was named to England’s Six Nations squad by new head coach Eddie Jones, and he came off the bench in the tournament’s final game as England defeated France to complete their first grand slam in over a decade.

Marler was named one of 41 players for the British and Irish Lions’ tour to New Zealand in June and July of that year on April 19, 2017.

He appeared in five tour games but did not play in the Test series against New Zealand.

Marler was recruited into the Barbarians squad in 2019, making his only appearance for the team against England on 2 June alongside teammate and captain James Horwill. Marler played for England again four months later, at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
