Jet Black Cause of Death, Age, Net Worth, Family – Jet Black was a founding member of the punk rock/new wave band The Stranglers.

He last performed with the band in 2015, and his retirement was announced in 2018 at the age of 79. He became a full-time professional musician in the mid-1970s after reading an advertisement in Melody Maker magazine and meeting Hugh Cornwell of the band Johnny Sox. Cornwell became a member of the Stranglers alongside Black.

His style is typically simple and jazz-influenced, though Stranglers songs such as “Duchess” and “Down in the Sewer” feature more frantic drumming. In the 1980s, Black abandoned acoustic drums in the studio in favor of a Simmons kit triggered by pick-ups, most notably on the Feline and Aural Sculpture albums.

During his long career in music, Black became aware of certain practical limitations inherent in basic kit design and set about addressing the issue with the now-patented ‘Jet Black Power Bass Drum Pedal,’ which allows the bass drum to be placed anywhere and still be playable.

The Stranglers’ website announced that Black was suffering from atrial fibrillation and would not be performing with the band until he recovered.

He rejoined the band in June, but it was at this point that he announced his retirement from performing outside of the United Kingdom due to health issues associated with long travel. During Black’s absences, his full-time drum technician Ian Barnard stepped in.

Jet Black was again absent from several Stranglers shows in mid-2008. Soon after, it was announced that he was suffering from chest pains and would “not be rushing back to work” on the advice of his doctor. He returned to full rehearsals in September 2008 and began touring with the band on October 13th.

Jet Black played every show on the Stranglers’ UK tours in 2010 and 2011. He played the entire sets, which lasted about 90 minutes.

Jet Black was taken to the hospital shortly before a Stranglers concert at the O2 Academy Oxford after “falling ill.” During the performance, he was replaced by Barnard. After feeling ill shortly after the band’s soundcheck, he was taken to hospital by ambulance, according to The Stranglers.

“Jet will do what he can when he can,” Stranglers guitarist Baz Warne told the Louder Than War website in January 2015. He’s a massive hard worker who has never shied away from anything, but even with the best of intentions, you can’t beat old age.

An online petition on the British Government website in 2008 requesting that he be included in the next list of honours received 477 signatures and was mentioned in the national press.
