English radio personality, singer and songwriter, Guy Edward John Garvey was born on March 6th 1974 in Bury in the United Kingdom. Guy Garvey was born to Shirley Harrington and Don Garvey. Guy had five older sisters, namely; Gina, Louise, Sam, Karen, and Becky and also a brother named Marcus Garvey who is an actor.
Early Life
Irish-born Garvey was raised in Bury, Lancashire. His father attended grammar school and was unable to go college. He worked at ICI for the majority of his career as a chemist and proofreader for newspapers. His mother was a policewoman who finished her education to become a psychologist.
Musical Career
At a sixth-form college in Whitefield, close to Bury, in the early 1990s, Garvey created Elbow with Pete Turner, Richard Jupp, Mark and Craig Potter. He writes the lyrics for Elbow, and throughout his career, he has received high recognition for his songwriting. Along with singing, Garvey has performed live on a wide range of instruments, including electric and acoustic guitar, trumpet, and numerous percussion instruments. For the 2008 single “Grounds for Divorce” and the song “One Day Like This,” Elbow won two Ivor Novello Awards for best songwriting. The Radio Academy honored him with a lifetime achievement award in 2014. He also appeared on the charity song for the relaunched Band-Aidd organization in the same year, which was used to collect money for the 2014 Ebola epidemic in Western Africa. The BBC hired Garvey and Elbow to write the theme song for the 2012 London Olympics, and Elbow performed this song, “First Steps,” during the Olympics’ closing ceremony. Garvey produced and recorded the I Am Kloot album Natural History, among other things (2001). He collaborated with Elbow keyboardist Craig Potter to create I Am Kloot’s 2005 single “Maybe I Should,” their 2010 album Sky at Night, which was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize, and their 2013 album Let It All In.
Elbow received the Mercury Music Prize in 2008 for their album “The Seldom Seen Kid,” and they were nominated for the award in 2011 for the album “Build a Rocket Boys!” Additionally, Garvey contributed to the 2010 Massive Attack album Heligoland. The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors is one of his professional organizations (BASCA). Garvey started supporting the Manchester Craft and Design Center in April 2012. In July of the same year, he was awarded an honorary degree from Manchester Metropolitan University to become a Doctor of Arts in recognition of his remarkable contributions to music. Since 2007, Garvey has hosted a show on BBC Radio 6 Music (which airs on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. British time). Previously, he hosted a show on XFM on Sunday nights. He was a regular contributor to the now-defunct listings magazine City Life and is a supporter of the Manchester-based charity Mines Advisory Group (MAG), which is in charge of removing mines and explosives from conflict zones throughout the world. Garvey debuted Music Box in 2015, an iPlayer-only series that covered both up-and-coming and well-established bands. Garvey has also performed multiple readings of children’s literature for the BBC’s “Bedtime Stories” series on CBeebies.
Garvey declared in 2015 that he will continue to serve as the principal songwriter for Elbow while also putting out his first studio album on his own. Courting the Squall, the resulting album was made available in the UK on October 30, 2015, by Polydor Records. Garvey played “Angela’s Eyes” and “Belly of the Whale” on BBC Two’s Later… with Jools Holland on October 27, 2015. Garvey played Kayleigh’s brother-in-law Steve in the BBC television comedy Peter Kay’s Car Share in April 2017. Garvey had an appearance as the bar singer in the episode “Fog of War” of the ITV series The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco in September 2018. “I Only Have Eyes for You” is sung by him. He worked with Wise Owl Films (a division of Lime Pictures) on the Sky Arts music series Guy Garvey: From The Vaults, which presents performances and conversations from a particular year in the history of pop and rock. The Tyne Tees-produced Channel 4 program The Tube, children’s programs like Tiswas, Razzmatazz, and Get It Together, and regional series like So It Goes, The London Weekend Show, and The Geordie Scene are also featured in the archived material. Many of the acts had never been seen before or were being presented for the first time since they had first aired. The show premiered on September 18, 2020, and it will return for a second season in 2021 and a third in 2022. Production is now underway on series 4 and 5.

Actress Rachael Stirling and Garvey started dating in 2015, and they got married at Manchester Town Hall in June 2016. In 2017, the couple gave birth to a son as their first child, Jack Stirling Garvey. In a 2019 interview, Garvey named Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock by Talk Talk as his two all-time favorite albums. He also listed Vespertine by Bjork, For the Roses by Joni Mitchell, I Am Kloot, and Peter Gabriel as his favorites.
