Is Ice Spice from Nigeria? – Ice Spice, born Isis Gaston on January 1, 2000, is an American rapper who grew up in the Bronx, New York City.

She began her music career in 2021 after meeting record producer RiotUSA while attending State University of New York at Purchase. She dropped out of university and pursued her passion for rap music.

Ice Spice’s debut single “Bully Freestyle” was produced by RiotUSA and released in March 2021. It gained popularity after a video of her doing the “Buss It” challenge went viral on Twitter. Her song “Name of Love” gained traction on SoundCloud, which helped her gain a following on Instagram.

In August 2022, Ice Spice released “Munch (Feelin’ U)”, a song produced by RiotUSA and distributed by WorldStarHipHop. On October 28, she released “Bikini Bottom,” her second single. Her debut EP, Like..?, was released on January 20, 2023, which included the singles “Munch (Feelin’ U)”, “Bikini Bottom”, and “In Ha Mood”.

In February 2023, Ice Spice collaborated with Lil Tjay on the tribute single “Gangsta Boo” to the late rapper of the same name, which became her first song on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 82. On February 3, 2023, Ice Spice was featured on the remix of singer PinkPantheress’s song, “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2,” along with a corresponding music video that was released. The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the highest charting position for either artist at the time.

Ice Spice’s music primarily falls under the genre of Bronx drill. Her stage name was inspired by a secret Instagram account she made at the age of 14. She writes all her own lyrics and has mentioned Sheff G and Pop Smoke as her initial inspirations for starting to rap. She has also listed Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Foxy Brown, and Remy Ma as her musical influences due to their New York roots. Ice Spice has also mentioned Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill as her inspirations due to their “graceful angelic vibe of timeless beauty.”

During a Twitter exchange in November 2022, Ice Spice is of Nigerian and Dominican descent. In response to a fan’s comment about her physical appearance, Ice Spice confirmed her Nigerian background, but expressed uncertainty about which tribe she belongs to.

The exchange on Twitter took place after the fan commented that Ice Spice looked “so Igbo,” to which the rapper responded with the confirmation of her Nigerian heritage.
