David Muir was born into a Catholic family in Syracuse, New York and was raised in Onondaga Hill. He has one older brother, two brothers-in-law, six nieces, and three nephews. He gradu ated from Onondaga Central Middle School in May 1991, attended local Ithaca College, and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in May 1995.

While in high school, he did an internship at WTVH-TV in Syracuse. During his college days, David Muir was inspired by a professor who said he had “a talent for being a television journalist.” He spent one semester at Georgetown University’s American Research Fund Department of Political Journalism and another semester abroad at the Institute of International Student Education at the University of Salamanca, Spain.
From 1994 to 2000, David Muir worked as a presenter and reporter for WTVH-TV in Syracuse, New York. David Muir’s reporting from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Israel and the Gaza Strip after the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995 earned him the highest honor from the Association of Radio, Television and News Directors. The Associated Press honored David Muir with Best Corporate Reporting and Best Television Interview. The Syracuse Press Club honored David Muir as Best Local Newscast Host and he was named one of Syracuse’s Best Local Newscasters.
From 2000 to 2003, David Muir was a host and reporter for WCVB Television in Boston, winning the regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Reporting, as well as the National Headliner Award and Associated Press honors for tracking the hijackers’ trails involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The Associated Press also credited him for his news hosting and reporting.
In August 2003, David Muir joined ABC News as the host of the evening news program World News Now. He also anchored ABC News’ morning news program World News This Morning (America This Morning). As of June 2007, David Muir was anchoring World News Saturday. In 2006 and occasionally thereafter, he was co-anchor of the news magazine Primetime.
In February 2012, David Muir became the anchor of a weekend news show, which was renamed ‘World News with David Muir’. David Muir was implicitly believed to have boosted ratings for his weekend night shows. In March 2013, David Muir was promoted to co-host Elizabeth Vargas on ABC’s 20/20.

In January 2013, David Muir reported from Iran in the run-up to nuclear talks. David Muir was the first Western journalist to cover the famine from Mogadishu, Somalia. David Muir and his team were criticized while reporting from Mogadishu. In 2013, he received the Edward R. Murrow Award for his reporting.
On June 27, 2014, ABC News announced that David Muir would succeed Diane Sawyer as anchor and editor-in-chief of ABC World News. David Muir made his broadcast debut on September 1, 2014.
