His mother, Edith Fogerty was a second grade teacher and his father was called Galen Robert Fogerty worked as a Linotype operator for the Berkeley Gazette in California.

Fogerty initially attended a Catholic school, the School of the Madeleine in Berkeley, California. Having been labeled the critical of the school, he left the school after a year and went to Harding Grammar School.
