Kemp was selected by the Houston Astros in the fifth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. He began his professional career with the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Class AA Texas League in 2015.

He began the season with the Grizzlies before being called up to the big team in May. On May 17, 2016, he made his long-awaited MLB debut. Kemp was on the Astros’ 40-man playoff roster. He saw no playoff action in the Astros’ World Series victory but won his first championship.
