He is a five time PGA Tour winner and a eight-time Japan Golf Tour champion. Matsuyama was ranked the No. 2 player in the world on 19 June 2017. After his finish as runner-up at the 2017 U.S. Open, Matsuyama was ranked #2 on the Official World Golf Ranking.
Matsuyama became a professional in April 2013. He won his second professional tournament, The 2013 TsuruyaOpen on the Japan Golf Tour. Matsuyama won the Diamond Cup Golf tournament five weeks later.
