Helen Mirren Parents: Meet Vasily and Kathleen

Her parents were both working-class and had emigrated to England from Russia and Germany before the start of World War II.

Her father, Vasiliy Petrovich Mironoff, was a Russian-born civil servant who worked for the British government. He changed the family’s name from Mironoff to Mirren in the 1950s, after Helen had started to pursue her acting career. Her mother, Kitty (née Kathleen Alexandrina Eva Matilda Rogers), was an Englishwoman who worked as a housewife.

Growing up, Mirren had a somewhat turbulent childhood due to her parents’ rocky marriage and her father’s heavy drinking. However, she has spoken fondly of her mother and has described her as a strong and independent woman who encouraged her children to pursue their passions.

Mirren has also spoken about the influence her father had on her life and career, describing him as a “wonderful storyteller” who instilled in her a love of language and storytelling.

Despite the challenges she faced growing up, Mirren has gone on to become one of the most successful and respected actresses of her generation, winning numerous awards and accolades for her work on stage, screen, and television. She has credited her parents with instilling in her a strong work ethic and a love of the arts, which has guided her throughout her career.
