Halle and her older sister, Heidi, were raised by Berry’s mother, Judith Hawkins, who is of English and German ancestry. Prior to staying at home, Judith Hawkins worked as a psychiatric nurse. Following the divorce, Judith battled alcoholism and assumed sole custody of her daughters. Halle’s mother moved the family from Cleveland to a predominantly white suburb of Chicago when Halle was a young girl, where she attended an all-white school.

Jerome Jesse Berry, Berry’s alcoholic and violent father, was an African-American hospital attendant. Halle claims she hasn’t spoken to him much since he left the family when she was four years old.
